TSTCI members provide a vital
service to rural Texas and understand the importance of the
agricultural industry which is the second largest industry in
the state. This program will allow TSTCI members to a provide a
forum for those members of the agricultural community as well as
all other industries represented in their districts to become
united in a coalition to support economic development,
transportation, health care and telecommunications for rural
Texas.
Texas has enjoyed a positive economy
for years and, therefore, must address major decisions on how to
meet the challenges created by that growth. The concerns of a
national recession only increase the possibility of a number of
legislative issues that would negatively affect rural Texas
through an increase of the sales tax and loss of certain tax
exemptions presently experienced by the agricultural industry.
Additional issues concerning water, eminent domain and private
property owner rights may also be topics of mutual concern which
may be addressed during the 81st Legislative Session starting in
January 2009.
Todd Staples, Commissioner of the
Texas Department of Agriculture, is recognized as the
spokesperson for the agricultural industry and has agreed to
participate throughout Texas in order to raise the awareness of
the importance rural Texas plays in the overall economy.
The TSTCI Coalition Building Program
is strictly voluntary on the part of the TSTCI members. TSTCI
will provide support for members that decide to implement the
program in their community.
